What are the Most Common Driving Errors?

Everybody makes the odd mistake while driving however some are more serious, and unfortunately more common, than others. Below are a few of the more common mistakes that should be avoided at all costs.

  1. Speeding. Over two thirds of all drivers admit to speeding occasionally. This is a driving offence and those who are caught get a hefty fine and points of their licence.
  2. Tailgating. This mistake is one of the biggest causes of traffic accidents, even though it can be easily avoided. Driving instructors often recommend a 2 second gap between you and the vehicle in front but it never hurts to leave that little bit extra.
  3. Failing to indicate. Indicating is often one of the first things that gets forgotten when you pass your test but it is an easy way to reduce the number of accidents each year. Simply showing your intentions stops the confusion and gives other drivers plenty of time to react to your manoeuvres.
  4. Failing to use the handbrake when stationary. The majority of seasoned drivers sit at traffic lights and junctions without their handbrake being on but this often leads to accidents – especially when they get a bit of a nudge from behind. It takes two seconds to apply the handbrake and two to release it so why not?
  5. Failing to check your blind spots. Cars, and even more so vans, have bind spots that motorbikes, cyclists and pedestrians can comfortably hide in. It just takes a second to glance over your shoulders so do it always and stay that little bit safer.
