Driving Safely – Driving Tips for Safe Driving
There are hundreds of ways to ensure safe driving however we believe these are the top few to take notice of.
- Wear seatbelts at all times – and that goes for your passengers as well as yourself.
- Take notice of the legal speed limits and stick to them.
- Use your indicators whenever you should. Showing people what you intend to do means they don’t have to guess.
- Leave a suitable gap between yourself and the vehicle in front. This should be equal to the minimum breaking distance plus a bit extra and if you’re travelling on a single carriage road then you need to allow for overtaking vehicles as well.
- Reduce the number of distractions in the vehicle to a minimum so that you have full concentration for the road. Turn off mobile phones and don’t play with the radio, electric mirrors or sat navs.
- Always check your blind spots before pulling out or overtaking. The windscreen pillars are the perfect width for obscuring motorbikes and cyclists so leave an additional few seconds before making your move.
- Take note of the weather conditions and drive accordingly. Rain after a dry spell can make the road very slippery and we all know how ice and snow affect steering. High winds can also cause problems so slow down to a suitable speed during bad weather.
- Take extra care on motorways, especially when joining the carriageway. Try to be travelling at the same speed as the motorway traffic when you join and always use the left hand lane unless overtaking.
- Last but not least, remember the way that you drove when you took your test and you’ll be one of the safest drivers on the road.
